EFSD and D-Cure announce Funding of Research Grants in 2010

Letters of Intent Deadline: 15 January 2010

   Background

The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) was founded in Montecatini, Italy, in 1965. In 1999, the Association created the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD). The aims of EFSD are to encourage and support research in the field of diabetes, to rapidly diffuse acquired knowledge and to facilitate its application. D-Cure Diabetes Care in Israel R.A. (D-Cure) is a recently established non-profit organisation that aims to advance basic and clinical research into diabetes in Israel.

This EFSD/D-Cure Programme is further supported by a charitable donation from another Israeli Foundation and the Berlin Charitable Trust.

   Programme

EFSD and D-Cure have established a partnership for research to encourage new projects aimed at advancing current knowledge in diabetes and its complications and undertaken by young investigators working in Israel in collaboration with an investigator working in another country in Europe. The Programme invites applications from non-profit organisations.

To achieve the goals and objectives of this Programme, EFSD and D-Cure invite applications by issuing this “Request for Letters of Intent (LoI) and Applications” (RFA), which indicates joint funding as well as areas of research emphasis.

The EFSD/D-Cure Young Investigator Awards for Collaborative Diabetes Research between Israel and Europe are intended to stimulate and accelerate diabetes research by offering awards, each in an amount of up to US$ 80,000. Applications will be considered for research focusing on diabetes (type 1 and type 2) and its complications.

   Mechanism of Support

Applications for each award may be accepted from any investigator under the age of 45 on December 31, 2010 working in a non-profit institution or group in Israel (the “Principal Investigator”: PI) and proposing a project in collaboration with an investigator (without any age restriction) from any single, nonprofit institution or group from Europe and associated countries excluding Israel (the “co-Principal Investigator”: co-PI). Funding for the co-PI will take the form of a contribution towards costs of experiments performed in the collaborating institution in the specific context of the award project.

Applicants should be independent investigators (already holding or being nominated for a tenure-track position) in an accredited institution of higher education. Awards will not be made to any investigator or staff working for or receiving payments for services rendered to either D-Cure or EFSD. No less than 85% of the total budget will be payable to the PI’s institution in Israel for work to be performed there in the specific context of the award. These funds may be used for any purpose directly related to the project EXCEPT for the purchase of equipment. Contribution towards costs incurred in the co-PI’s laboratory may not exceed 15% of the total budget and must be justified in the application as being for the specific purposes of the collaborative project.

The (Israeli) PI must visit the collaborating institution/co-PI during the course of the award and costs of travel for this purpose will be included in the budget (maximum $2,000). The (European) co-PI must visit Israel at least once during the course of the project as a Visiting Professor. The purpose of the visit will be to meet with the PI and his/her group but also to give a seminar in this and at least one other academic institution in Israel.

Individuals pursuing this mandatory activity will be known as: Berlin Visiting Professor in Diabetes, supported by the EFSD/D-Cure Research Partnership. The budget for this purpose may not exceed US$2,500 to include costs of travel and accommodation in Israel Letters of Intent and applications will be subject to scientific review by a specialised ad hoc committee.

Funding will require approval by a joint EFSD and D-Cure Board convened for this purpose. It is anticipated that approval for funding will be announced by June 2010.

   Letter of Intent Procedure

Letters of Intent for the EFSD-Cure Young Investigator Awards are invited from single non-profit institutions or groups of such institutions from Europe and associated countries. The principal investigator and any co-investigators must be normally employed at a non-profit institution and the study must be performed at such a place of work.

Letters of Intent may be downloaded here. Deadline for receipt of the Letters of Intent is 15 January 2009.

Letters of Intent will be reviewed by an independent ad hoc panel of experts and, upon invitation only, those deemed of particular interest will be considered for funding by way of submission of a full application for competitive review.

   Review Considerations

Letters of Intent and full applications will be evaluated in accordance with the criteria stated below for scientific/technical merit by an appropriate scientific committee convened by EFSD.

Review criteria are as follows:

  • Significance:Does the study address an important problem in keeping with the goals and focus areas of this EFSD/D-Cure partnership programme? If the aims of the application are achieved, how will scientific knowledge be advanced? What will be the effect
  • Approach: Are the conceptual framework, design, methods and analyses adequately developed, well integrated, and appropriate to the aims of the project? Does the applicant acknowledge potential problem areas and consider alternative tactics?
  • Innovation: Does the project employ novel concepts, approaches or methods? Are the aims original and innovative? Does the project challenge existing paradigms or develop new methodologies or technologies?
  • Collaboration: Will the project benefit from the proposed collaboration? Will this collaboration foster closer contacts between the investigators?
  • Investigators: Are the PI and co-PI appropriately trained and well suited to carry out this work? Is the work proposed appropriate to the experience level of the investigators and other researchers, if any?
  • Environment: Does the scientific environment in which the work will be done contribute to the probability of success? Do the proposed experiments take advantage of unique features of the scientific environment or employ useful collaborative arrangements? Is there evidence of institutional support?
  • Budget: Is the requested budget appropriate for the proposed study?

   Reporting Requirements

All investigators funded by this Programme are required to submit a scientific report at the end of the funding period. Investigators must provide EFSD with copies of papers accepted for publication, and must acknowledge the support of the Programme in all written material by use of the phrase: “supported by an EFSD/D-Cure Young Investigator Award”.
